Maats is of course best known for its pipeline construction machinery that we supply to projects around the globe but those who follow us know that every now and then we make a small sidestep and use our machines, with a modification, for completely different applications. Well known are the sidebooms converted to conveyor belt shifters as used in open pit mines but more unknown is the winch tractor that we now have rented to a number of projects over recent years.
This winch tractor is a modified Liebherr RL44 sideboom, supplied without the boom and counterweights, and it is used on landfill sites to assist / secure a compactor or roller to prepare slopes with a drop up to 40°. Mostly these machines would be able to work as stand-alone but for safety reasons they latch it to a winch on top of the hill to prevent them from sliding down, especially in wet conditions or with loose soil. The big advantage of using a (converted) sideboom is that, as opposed to for instance our Liebherr WR624 shown below that has a front winch, the winch cable here is on the side of the machine. Now you can reposition easily and always keep a straight angle without disconnecting and connecting the winch cable all the time, thus saving valuable time!
